Roselle makes one of the most forgiving cups of tea you can brew. It asks for very little: hot water, a few minutes, and a little patience while the colour deepens to a rich burgundy. But a few small choices (how long you steep, how hot the water is, whether you sweeten it) make the difference between a good cup and a really lovely one.
At Burgundy Bāgh, every tea and drink starts with roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) grown by hand in Harda, Madhya Pradesh. So we spend a lot of time thinking about how to get the best out of it. Here is how we would brew it, hot or iced.
What You'll Need
Brewing roselle well doesn't need any special equipment.
- Roselle tea: loose whole-leaf, a pyramid tea bag, or an instant premix
- Fresh water
- A cup or teapot, or a jug and glass for iced
- Optional: mishri (rock sugar), honey, a slice of lemon, or fresh mint
That is it. No milk, because roselle is served clear so its colour and natural tang come through.
How to Brew Roselle Tea (Hot)
This is the classic way, and the one we would start with. It works for all our Herbal and Green Teas: Classic, Rose, Mint and Cinnamon.
With loose whole-leaf tea:
- Boil fresh water and let it cool slightly, to around 80 to 85°C.
- Add one teaspoon of loose roselle per cup.
- Pour 200ml of hot water over the tea.
- Brew for 3 to 5 minutes, then strain. The longer you steep, the deeper the colour and fuller the tang.
- Serve without milk. Sweeten with a little mishri or honey only if you like.
With a pyramid tea bag:
- Place one tea bag in a cup.
- Pour 200ml of freshly boiled water over it.
- Steep for 3 to 5 minutes, then remove the bag.
Our loose-leaf brewing guide, hot or cold
A note on steep time. Roselle rewards patience but does not punish it. It will not turn bitter the way some leaf teas do. A longer steep simply gives you a bolder, tarter, more ruby cup. If your tea is too tart for your taste, steep for less time or top up with a splash of hot water.
How to Brew Roselle Iced Tea
When the weather turns, the same flower becomes one of the most refreshing cold drinks going. There are two easy routes.
The Quick Way (Instant Premix)
Our Roselle Iced Tea is built for this: a premix sweetened with mishri and flavoured with lemongrass and masala.
- Take one tablespoon (15g) of premix, or empty one sachet, into a glass.
- Pour in 150ml of cold water.
- Stir well until dissolved.
- Add ice cubes and enjoy. No sugar needed, because the mishri does the sweetening.

The Refreshing Roselle Drink with Himalayan Pink Salt works exactly the same way, and makes a lovely cooling drink for a hot afternoon.
The Slow Way (Cold Brew from Tea)
Prefer to start from tea? Cold brew gives a smooth, mellow glass.
- Place two teaspoons of loose tea (or two tea bags) in a glass.
- Pour 200ml of hot water over it and brew for 5 minutes.
- Refrigerate for 3 to 4 hours.
- Add ice, and finish with fresh mint or a slice of lemon.

Tips for the Perfect Cup
- Use fresh water. Reboiled water tastes flat.
- Mind the temperature. Around 80 to 85°C suits loose roselle; a few seconds off the boil is plenty.
- Taste as you go. Steep time is personal; there is no single right answer.
- Sweeten gently, if at all. Mishri or honey complement roselle's tang without burying it.
- Store it well. Keep roselle in a cool, dry place away from anything with a strong odour.
What Makes Roselle Worth Brewing Well
Roselle earns its place on more than colour and flavour, though it has plenty of both. The dried calyces are a natural source of Vitamin C and antioxidants, and because roselle comes from a flower rather than a tea bush, it is naturally caffeine-free. A cup sits just as easily at the end of a long evening as it does first thing in the morning.
We will not dress it up with grand medicinal promises, because that is not how we talk. What we can tell you honestly is what is in the pack and what is not: no added colours, no artificial flavours, no preservatives. What you taste is the flower, and nothing else.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should you steep roselle tea?
Steep roselle for 3 to 5 minutes in hot water (around 80 to 85°C for loose leaf). Three minutes gives a lighter, gently tart cup; five minutes gives a deeper colour and bolder tang. Roselle will not turn bitter with a longer steep, so adjust to your taste.
Can you drink roselle tea every day?
Yes. Roselle is naturally caffeine-free and made from an edible flower, so it is an easy everyday cup, morning or night. As with any food or drink, enjoy it as part of a balanced diet.
Is roselle tea the same as hibiscus tea?
Effectively, yes. What most of the world calls hibiscus tea is made from the dried calyces of roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa), an edible member of the hibiscus family. It is different from the ornamental garden hibiscus (Gudhal) grown for its showy petals.
Do you add milk to roselle tea?
No. Roselle is served clear, without milk, so its ruby colour and natural tang come through. Sweeten lightly with mishri or honey if you like.
How do you make roselle iced tea quickly?
Take one tablespoon (15g) of Roselle Iced Tea premix, or one sachet, into a glass. Add 150ml cold water, stir, and add ice. It is sweetened with mishri, so no sugar is needed. Ready in seconds.
Ready to Brew Your Own?
The gentlest place to start is the Roselle Assorted Tea Bags, all four flavours in one box, so you can find the cup that feels like yours. Or begin where we began, with the pure, crisp, tangy Classic.
Brew it slow, serve it without milk, and let the colour deepen to a rich ruby. That unhurried moment is the whole idea.
